Course Description


Investigations is a 14-hour course that deals with all aspects of an investigation at a basic to intermediate level. The focus is on the investigator’s preparation, planning, skills, information gathering, interviewing skills, report writing and fairness. We will work through all the steps of an investigation. Topics will include the scope or jurisdiction of the investigator, terms of reference, the requirement for a fair process, the investigation plan, the objective standard, interviewing witnesses and gathering documents, the impact of personal observation, making factual findings, writing reports, making recommendations or decisions, and using the report in other proceedings.

Course Purposes:


The purposes of this course are to:



  • build skills and best practices in investigations

  • examine investigations from the perspective of investigator, advocate, complainant, respondent, and witness

  • develop interview skills

  • improve fact-finding

  • improve report writing


Course Outcomes:


After this course, you will be able to:



  • explain and apply the required elements of fairness in investigations, including disclosure and bias

  • fairly manage the roles of the investigator, advocate, complainant, respondent, and witnesses in an investigation

  • plan an investigation that stays within scope and meet the terms of reference while being practical and timely

  • effectively plan for and question witnesses and seek relevant information

  • clearly and logically explain in written report findings of fact linked to the scope, terms of reference and relevant evidence

  • confidently identify and implement practical tips for best practices in investigations, and

  • plan your next phase of learning about investigations in a self-learning plan.
