The Youth Recreation Program Coordinator is responsible for the co-development, implementation and evaluation of a variety of recreational programs which incorporate culture and traditions of the Kwanlin Dün people and promote pride in individuals, families and the community. Focusing on youth aged 6-17, the programming will have a main purpose of reducing risk factors and improving quality of life.

 

The position will work with a community focused lens delivering key programming opportunities to children and youth.  Collaboration within Justice and KDFN as a whole is needed to ensure effective planning for future programming that is in line with community needs. Monitoring all aspects of program delivery including mentoring support staff and liaising with the Manager, Community Recreation are large components of the role.

Required Qualifications (what we look for on your resume):  An equivalent combination of post-secondary education (i.e.: Diploma), combined with significant current/lived experience in the areas identified above, will equally be considered.

  • Diploma in Recreational Leadership or equivalent, OR a minimum of 2 years of relevant post-secondary coursework
  • Experience in planning and coordinating programs, projects and/or events (preference for recreational activities).
  • Experience leading, motivating and mentoring staff and volunteers.
  • Land based and culturally relevant program implementation experience is an asset.

Required knowledge and skills (what we assess on/interview for):

 

  • Ability to plan, develop, implement, promote, and market land-based recreation and cultural programs effectively.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to coordinate and motivate staff and volunteers.
  • Proficiency in using computers and standard office equipment.
  • Ability to foster positive and professional relationships with client groups, their families/caregivers, partners, colleagues, and community members.
  • Strong client relations skills, including conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrates initiative, is a self-starter, and can work independently while contributing effectively to a team.


Knowledge of Yukon First Nations history within formalized education systems, residential schools and on-going intergenerational effects specific to education and social programming is an asset. Familiarity with Kwanlin Dün First Nation history, culture, goals and aspirations is required for success in the role.

Conditions of Employment: 

  • An acceptable criminal records check with vulnerable sector clearance prior to commencement of employment.
  • Valid Yukon Driver’s License (Class 4 desirable) and acceptable abstract.
  • First Aid & CPR-C (remote/wilderness first aid an asset).
  • Ability to demonstrate and maintain a healthy, self-sufficient lifestyle.
