The Housing Support Liaison Worker works in partnership with colleagues in the tenancy unit, other KDFN departments, as well as with community agencies to ensure that those in need of affordable housing can access a range of options for assistance.  Case management and a client-based wrap-around approach to providing the best support for individuals and families is required; as is collaboration with other departments (i.e., Justice, Education, Health).
 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides information on the KDFN Rental housing program to current tenants:
  • Assists KDFN citizens refers and may advocate for KDFN citizens applying for housing with agencies Develops and fosters trust based working relationships with clients; and
  • Provides interpretation, advice and recommendations regarding client obligations under the Residential Landlord and Tenant Act and related KDFN policies, procedures and processes to citizens.

 

Job Overview

Reporting to the Manager of Tenant Relations, the Housing Support Liaison Worker is responsible for providing housing advocacy, navigation and social housing related services to Kwanlin Dün First Nation (KDFN) citizens in our rental-housing program as well as to those seeking supports for housing in the greater Whitehorse community.   There is a critical need for housing.  The Housing Support Liaison Worker must have knowledge and understanding of the current social issues facing the KDFN tenant populations and how they impact the operations of the housing Program.  Understanding the current social issues including homelessness, mental illness and addiction, domestic violence, child protection and ageing is required.

 

Required Qualifications (what we look/screen for on your resume): An equivalent combination of post-secondary education (i.e.: Diploma), combined with significant current/lived experience in the areas identified above, will equally be considered.

  • Post-secondary level coursework in social work, social services or similar fields;
  • Considerable experience in the field of social services;
  • Experience providing housing support/advocacy is an asset, and in dealing with conflicts (conflict resolution/mediation or similar); and
  • Experience with confidential records & information management.

Required Skills (what we asses on/may interview on):

  • Experience providing customer service to the public, in person, on the phone and by e-mail;
  • Solid working experience on computers, including fluency and proficiency with the Microsoft operating system, Excel, Word, Outlook and various databases and information systems;
  • Knowledge of the social issues facing KDFN tenant populations and affecting the operations of the Housing Program, including homelessness, mental illness and addiction, domestic violence, child protection and ageing is required; and
  • Knowledge of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation history, culture, demographics, goals & aspirations is required for success in the role.

 

Knowledge of Yukon First Nations history within formalized education systems, residential schools and on-going intergenerational effects specific to education and social programming is an asset. Familiarity with Kwanlin Dün First Nation history, culture, goals and aspirations is required for success in the role.

Conditions of Employment: 

An acceptable criminal records check. Valid Class 5 Driver’s License, personal vehicle and acceptable driver’s abstract.

Job Requirements:

The use of a personal vehicle is required; reimbursement for mileage is provided as is provision for financial assistance to offset possible increase to insurance premiums pursuant to policy. Occasional overtime may be requirements of the position.  This would be pre-scheduled or pre-authorized in advanced.
