Home to the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations people, St. Elias Community School is one of 8 Yukon schools who have joined the newly established First Nation School Board (FNSB) in the Yukon. Southern Tutchone is the traditional language of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations people.

St. Elias Community School is a K4-12 school with approximately 150 students. We are actively seeking a committed and qualified educator who is dedicate to living and being an active member within the Haines Junction community. Our educational professionals’ value authentic relationships and are committed to working with students, community, administration and the FNSB to make positive, progressive changes to education outcomes for learners of Haines Junction.

This role of language and cultural teacher is critical in the successful development and implementation of local Southern Tutchone Language & Culture program. The focus for this position will be to teach, promote and support the Southern Tutchone language and culture in the school. It is imperative that one be able to maintain positive relationships with primary students and offer a language and culture program that is engaging and culturally relevant (on the land and experiential for example). The position is temporary until March 10, 2023, with the possibility of an extension.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Please clearly demonstrate on your cover letter and resume, how you meet the following qualifications and experience:

• Completion of Yukon Native Language Centre certification/diploma program or equivalent;
• Demonstrated language proficiency (read, write and speak) or a desire to learn the Southern Tutchone language to deliver the Southern Tutchone language and culture program at the primary level;
• Demonstrated and on-going commitment to improve language proficiency;
• Extensive knowledge and awareness of either Champagne and Aishihik First Nations culture, traditional practices, values and beliefs as well as a good understanding of the past and current issues in education, heritage and languages with a view to past, the present and the future;

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND SUITABILITY:
• Strong interest and ability to teach the Southern Tutchone language and culture as a second language;
• Strong classroom management skills;
• Ability to adapt and modify curriculum to address students‘ needs and gifts to ensure that all students experience success in this program;
• Ability to work as a team member and a willingness and enthusiasm to participate in all staff meetings, school wide functions and initiatives, as well as Yukon First Nations Language Teacher professional development;
• Ability to connect and collaborate with school based staff, parents and/or caregiver;
• Willingness to actively promote Southern Tutchone language and culture within school programming and environment.
• Willingness to mentor a language trainee for 2 years, if required.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
• Preference will be given to Southern Tutchone language qualified citizens of the Champagne & Aishihik First Nations/Ta‘an Kwach’an/Kwanlin Dun and Kluane First Nation;
• Successful applicant will be required to undergo a security/vulnerable sector check prior to starting work.
