Reporting to the Director of Implementation, the Senior Negotiator for Nän Käk is the lead negotiator and project manager with respect to agreements and legislation that uphold TH’s inherent Aboriginal and treaty rights related to the land and the environment (nän käk). The incumbent maintains strong ties to the community while promoting the use of Dënezhu principles and values to guide negotiations and consultations with Citizens. The incumbent provides advice on policies and legislation on a wide range of Implementation issues, and has a key role in the coordination and implementation of land and environment provisions set out in the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Final Agreement. The incumbent provides advice on the development of internal and external initiatives related to land, fish and wildlife. 

An Eligibility List may be established from this competition – the duration of the eligibility list may be up to 12 months. The eligibility list may be used to fill future permanent full-time, permanent part-time, temporary full-time, temporary part-time, term, or auxiliary on-call vacancies within the same department and classification based on the organizational needs by going the next highest ranked candidate until the eligibility list expires.

Essential Qualifications:  

  • An advanced post-secondary degree (Masters or PhD) in law, natural sciences, environmental studies, planning and negotiation, geography or a relevant field of study, combined with demonstrated work experience in one or more of these fields. An equivalent combination of education, knowledge, skills and experience may be considered.
  • A working knowledge of Dënezhu values and principles, and the social structure, traditions, language and cultural values of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in.
  • Strong working experience in policy and legislation development.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting intergovernmental negotiations.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting research, analyses and project management.
  • Strong working knowledge of the TH Final Agreement, the TH Self-Government Agreement, the Final Agreement Implementation Plan, the Self-Government Implementation Plan, the TH Constitution, Program and Service Transfer Agreements and Financial Transfer Agreements.
  • Strong conflict resolution, problem-solving, mediation and negotiation skills.
  • Diligent work ethic, with strong ethical standards, sound judgment and informed decision-making skills. 

Assets:  

  • Knowledge and experience working within a First Nation Government in areas related to the land and environment is an asset.
  • Financial and budgeting experience an asset.
  • Awareness of the political, cultural, social and economic environment in which Self-Governing First Nations operate.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with Citizens, TH Government staff, the Senior Management Team and TH Council.
