Northwestel is hiring a Senior Manager, Health & Safety to join the team! Reporting to the CFO/VP Corporate Services, the Health & Safety Manager is responsible for company-wide leadership in establishing the strategic direction for health and safety. 

The Senior Manager, Health & Safety is responsible for directing, planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating corporate health and safety programs, services, strategies, policies, procedures, and systems.  Doing so ensures the health and safety program will reduce and or eliminate job injuries, illness, death, financial losses, by promoting an incident free workplace. The Health & Safety Manager acts as an advisor to the Executive on matters concerning safety compliance issues stemming from COR safety audits, HRSDC audits, WSCC audits.  In addition, advising on issues concerning safety standards, regulations, and legislative compliance. The Health & Safety Manager works closely with all levels of management, employees, contractors, and outside government organizations to ensure consistent promotion and utilization of safe work practices. In addition, the Health & Safety Manager acts as the company’s Safety Auditor and maintains five yearly audits across the regions to identify non-compliance with legislative best practices.

Specific Accountabilities 

  • Provides direct mentorship, guidance, and leadership to the Health and Safety team.  In addition, acts as a key resource to the Executive Team with respect to Health and Safety processes, best practices and activities.
  • Maintains an ongoing understanding of the company’s operations, strategic plans, and the related health and safety risks and issues.
  • Performs strategic planning and financial management to ensure that the health and safety program meets the business requirements of the organization in a cost-effective and sustainable manner.
  • Continues to seek strategic opportunities for ongoing improvement to the HS&E program to move it from good to great, quickly take steps to implement or adapt the appropriate changes or enhancements with the end goal of having a highly credible and respected H&S program in the industry.
  • Improves the company’s health and safety program in a manner that addresses the program deficiencies identified in internal and external audits.
  • Monitors workers' compensation programs, NT/NU Safe Advantage, YT Choices and Work Safe BC to ensure cost containment, compliance with existing law and to provide adequate service to employees.

Knowledge and Skills Required 

  • Completion of relevant degrees, diplomas, or certifications, the following disciplines: Health and Safety (e.g. Canadian Registered Safety Professional certification), and a minimum two to three years related work experience. 
  • Excellent investigative, research, report writing, statistical and analytical skills
  • Good communication skills (oral and written) including the ability to do presentations and provide training
  • Good interpersonal skills and strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of the telecommunications industry is an asset.
  • The incumbent will be required to undergo a Criminal Background check and obtain a Government of Canada security clearance.
