Repairs & Maintenance Supervisor - Term

Salary:  Level 8 Step 1 ($3,770.25 bi-weekly)

Reporting to the Housing & Facilities Manager, the Repairs and Maintenance Supervisor receives work orders and prepares schedules for the repair, maintenance and renovations of TH rental housing units, and TH government buildings and facilities.  The incumbent, who also serves as lead hand and works directly with and leads the housing and facilities maintenance staff with respect to the assignment and timely completion of work orders, within budget and on schedule. The position tracks each work order and provides progress updates to the Manager. As supervisor, the incumbent coaches and supports the members of the housing and facilities maintenance staff, and is responsible for approving timesheets and leave and for dealing with any performance issues and preparing performance appraisals.  The position strictly complies with national and Yukon Building Codes, TH Policies and Procedures and enforces Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) Regulations and safety procedures. The position is expected to participate in emergency callouts after normal work hours if requested. Occasionally, the incumbent will assist with special projects and with logistical arrangements for community events. 

An Eligibility List may be established from this competition – the duration of the eligibility list may be up to 12 months. The eligibility list may be used to fill future permanent full-time, permanent part-time, temporary full-time, temporary part-time, term, or auxiliary on-call vacancies within the same department and classification based on the organizational needs by going the next highest ranked candidate until the eligibility list expires.

Essential Qualifications:  

  • Grade 12 (or GED) with more than two (2) years of post-secondary training in a related housing/facilities maintenance filed combined with training/courses/experience related to construction supervision and project management. Journeyman Red Seal Ticket Journeyman Red Seal Ticket (i.e., certified carpenter, electrician, plumber) is considered a strong asset. An equivalent combination of education, knowledge, skills and experience may be considered.
  • Basic understanding of the National and Yukon Building Codes and CMHC programming.
  • Knowledge and experience in general building trades, basic construction, renovations and repairs.
  • Good understanding and experience with the basics of carpentry, plumbing and electrical.
  • Ability to design and develop specification diagrams for renovation and basic construction projects.
  • Good basic knowledge of renovation job assessments, specifications, planning and job costing (materials and labour hours).
  • Excellent supervisory, mentoring, coaching and instructional skills, particularly with work staff teams.
  • Computer proficiency in email, internet, Word, Excel and basic project design / costing applications / software.

Assets: 

  • Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations, and safe work practices with respect to building renovations, repairs and maintenance;
  • Knowledge of Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in culture and values.
  • Knowledge of applicable City of Dawson housing, building, and subdivision bylaws and permitting processes. 

Conditions of Employment:

  • Class 5 driver’s license with a clear driver’s abstract.
  • Remote First Aid or willingness to obtain.
  • Boat Safety Training and Pleasure Craft Operator’s License / ATV Operations training / Bear Aware Training, or willingness to take.
