The City of Whitehorse FireSmart team supports wildfire preparedness, prevention, and mitigation through public education, property assessments, and arranging mitigation work to reduce community risk from wildfires.
Reporting to the Parks Supervisor, the FireSmart Outreach Outreach Person is responsible for supporting the implementation of the FireSmart program within the City by working to empower community members in taking steps to FireSmart their properties and supporting public education.
Duties and Responsibilities:

- Conducts FireSmart Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) assessments within Whitehorse and provides recommendations to property owners.
- Records data, maintains records and makes appointments regarding assessments.
- Assists with organizing, planning, and participates in public education events such as FireSmart work bees, market days, and special events.
- Attends training and/or workshops related to FireSmart and wildfire risk reduction.
- Follows, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standards.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Position Requirements
Working Conditions:
Work is split between an office environment and exposure to inclement weather and extreme temperatures when working outside. Work hours may include shifts from Sunday to Saturday for 35 hours per week. Occasional evening and weekend work will be necessary.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Grade 12
- 1 year related experience and 3 months on the job experience
- Basic knowledge of FireSmart principles, fire behaviour, building construction, and residential landscaping practices (FireSmart Home Ignition Zone Assessment training an asset)
- Proficiency with a variety of general office software (e.g. MS Office)
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions with minimal supervision in a timely manner.
- Able to work effectively and cooperatively within a diverse team to achieve group and organizational goals.
- Demonstrated professionalism and ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy with the public.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Examples of Equipment to Operate:
City vehicles such as trucks, trailers, general maintenance equipment, wood chipper, basic carpentry and small power tools may be used. Camera, FireSmart phone apps, scheduling software and ladders will be used. General office equipment including computer skills to operate general and specialized software used for word processing, spreadsheet creation and electronic mail are used.
