Reporting to the Manager of Land Planning, the Urban Planning & Policy Advisor develops, coordinates and manages planning and development initiatives on Kwanlin Dün First Nation (KDFN) lands.
This position is responsible for coordinating and managing urban planning and development initiatives on KDFN Settlement Lands within communities; ensuring KDFN effectively meets land and resource planning mandates under the Final Agreement and Self-Government Agreement, the Lands Act, the Land Vision, and the Community Lands Plan, among others. The position is also responsible for supporting other units within HLR in the development and implementation of the KDFN legislation and policies related to planning and development.Required Qualifications (what we look/screen for on your resume):
- Degree in Urban Planning, Urban Design, Land Management, Environmental Studies, Land Resource Management or equivalent;
- Working knowledge and 2 years’ experience in land management or land use planning;
- Experience interpreting and administering complex legislation and regulations, preferably related to land planning;
- Experience working with partner organizations on complex land development projects;
- Experience interpreting and providing advice on land issues, with the ability to handle politically sensitive matters, analyze, identify and recommend action options for senior management;
- Knowledge of project management methods and techniques;
- Knowledge of territorial, federal government and other agencies land planning processes and initiatives;
- Experience working in a First Nation government setting is an asset;

Knowledge and skills (what we asses on/may interview on):
- Knowledge of Kwanlin Dün First Nation Final and Self-Government agreements;
- Be willing to learn KDFN land administration and land planning policies and processes;
- In depth knowledge of various government and agency land administration processes and initiatives.
- Ability to work independently while adhering to the departmental goals and objectives and follow through with assigned tasks and responsibilities;
- Ability to foster trust, acceptance and interest with staff, senior management and Citizens;
- Ability to resolve problems and conflict situations Ability to use ArcMap, or other GIS or spatial software
- Computer competence in Microsoft Office operating system, spreadsheets, databases, outlook/e-mail, GIS and ArcView or similar.
- Excellent problem-solving, planning, organizing, prioritizing and time management skills;
- Strong communication skills (consultation, public meetings);
Knowledge of Kwanlin Dün First Nation governance structure, our community, heritage and culture, social structure, language and traditions, goals, and aspirations are essential for success in this position.
Conditions of employment: an acceptable criminal records check, valid class 5 Driver’s License; Access to personal vehicle is an asset;
Job Requirements: Occasional travel to other Yukon communities. Variable work hours, occasional weekends as workload dictates.
