The Kwanlin Dün First Nation Education and Social Development Department is offering a opportunity for an aspiring Speech and Language Pathologist Assistant (SLP-A) who is passionate about supporting children, youth, and families. Rooted in KDFN values, culture, and the Circle of Care model, this position provides hands on experience working under the supervision of a Speech and Language Pathologist to support communication, language, and literacy development for students from kindergarten to grade 12. The trainee will gain practical skills delivering individualized and group activities, preparing culturally responsive therapy materials, and collaborating with educators, Elders, and families. This opportunity is ideally suited for someone willing to complete or currently enrolled in a multi-year University/College diploma program in Speech and Language Pathology Assistant studies, while gaining meaningful, community-based experience. It is an excellent pathway for individuals committed to culturally safe, community-driven care who are interested in building a career in speech and language services while contributing to the well-being and lifelong learning of KDFN citizens.

Required Qualifications (what we look/screen for on your resume):

  • Certificate/Diploma in Speech and Language Pathology Assistant Studies, Communication Disorders Assistant, Therapy Assistant, or equivalent combination of training and experience is required.
  • Additional coursework or experience in education, linguistics, child development, literacy, or Indigenous studies considered an asset.
  • Experience in the provision of person-centered case management services as an asset.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and various databases, search engines and outlook/email required.

·         Strong knowledge of psychological assessment tools and techniques

·         Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

·         Ability to work collaboratively with educators, parents, and community members

·         Commitment to ongoing professional development and cultural competence

·         Knowledge of trauma-informed care and practices

·         Case management skills include relationship building, interviewing, assessment, and advocacy

·         Exercise discretion, objectivity, tact, diplomacy, and good judgment

·         Active listening skills

 
Knowledge of Yukon First Nations history within formalized education systems, residential schools and on-going intergenerational effects specific to education and social programming is an asset. Familiarity with Kwanlin Dün First Nation history, culture, goals and aspirations is required for success in the role.

Salary:                  $82,464.20 - $148,566.60 per annum ($45.31 - $81.63 per hour) Level 8 *plus benefits
