Reporting to the Manager, Restorative Justice and Community Safety, or their designate the Indigenous Court Worker’s (ICW) primary responsibility is to assist and support Indigenous individuals, including Kwanlin Dün Citizens, with navigating the legal/court system. The support provided will be unique to each individual, based on each person’s needs and goals, and may include both in and out of court support.
The ICW is responsible for attending all regular sessions of court in Whitehorse in full, and potentially Yukon communities upon request. They may also attend related meetings and appointments with individuals upon request.
To be successful in this role, the ICW will need to work collaboratively with the Yukon Legal Services Society (YLSS) as we develop our partnership. The ICW will also need to develop and maintain good working relationships with other justice agencies, including but not limited to the RCMP, Yukon Corrections, Court Services, Corrections Services Canada (CSC), Victim Services, Public Prosecutions Service Canada (PPSC), Yukon First Nation justice programs, Yukon court personnel, and other government, community, and private agencies.
The ICW will also help guide the development of initiatives designed to improve justice services for First Nations’ people throughout the Yukon. This will be accomplished in part by participating in working groups to promote systemic change within the mainstream justice system, as well as the reclamation of traditional practices.
Required Qualifications (what we screen/look for on your resume): An equivalent combination of post-secondary education (i.e.: Diploma), combined with significant current/lived experience in the areas identified above, will equally be considered.- Experience supporting Indigenous individuals involved in the justice system (e.g., court navigation, legal advocacy, or culturally relevant support)
- Experience working directly with Indigenous communities or organizations in a justice, social service, or community support capacity
- Experience attending and participating in court proceedings as a support worker, advocate, or similar role.
- Experience working collaboratively with partner organizations (e.g., Legal Aid, RCMP, Crown/defense counsel, corrections, or community justice programs)
- Experience providing client-based support services, including advocacy, case management, or accompaniment to appointments/hearings

- Able to work both independently and in a team environment;
Knowledge of Yukon First Nations history within formalized education systems, residential schools and on-going intergenerational effects specific to education and social programming is an asset. Familiarity with Kwanlin Dün First Nation history, culture, goals and aspirations is required for success in the role.

Salary: $68,286.40 - $107,762.20 per annum ($37.52 - $59.21 per hour) Level 6 *plus benefits
