Reporting to the Manager, Home and Community Care, the Home Support Worker provides care and assistance to assigned home care clients, including Elders and persons with mobility concerns, to support safe, independent, and dignified living in their own homes. Duties include personal care and assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, toileting, shopping, meal preparation and facilitating community access and socialization.
 
The primary objective of this position is to support Elders and clients with mobility challenges to live independently and with dignity in their own homes. The successful candidate will demonstrate relevant experience, a willingness to perform the full scope of the role, reliability, strong time‑management skills, and a commitment to maintaining strict confidentiality. The role requires excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills, compassion, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. This position involves providing services within clients’ homes.

Required Qualifications (what we screen/look for on your resume): An equivalent combination of post-secondary education (i.e.: Diploma), combined with significant current/lived experience in the areas identified above, will equally be considered.

  • Grade 12 or equivalent, with a minimum of one to two (2) years of current successful experience providing home support services and care to clients in their homes.
  • Completion of Health Care Assistant, Personal Support Worker, or equivalent training for home support workers or nursing home attendants is an asset.
  • Experience with and willingness to complete charting, documentation, and basic record‑keeping.
  • Home care assistant training is an asset

Knowledge and Skills (Assessed Through the Interview Process)

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage assigned workload, including planning, scheduling, and completing assigned duties in a timely manner
  • Strong time‑management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize competing demands and meet deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to interact with clients, families, and colleagues in a respectful, compassionate, and professional manner
  • Ability to identify, assess, and respond appropriately to risk and emergency situations
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining confidentiality and adhering to privacy requirements
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Home Support Worker, Health Care Aide, or Nursing Home Attendant certification is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of Kwanlin Dün First Nation history, culture, and practices; community demographics, social dynamics, goals, and aspirations; and a general understanding of Indigenous health and social issues is required for success in this position

Conditions of Employment:

  • Pre-employment criminal records check with vulnerable sector search, including ongoing maintenance of an acceptable clearance;
  • Pre-employment TB Screening;
  • Valid Yukon Class 5 Driver’s license and Abstract;
  • Doctor’s Note of Medical Fitness Note (fit for work), if requested by the supervisor;
  • Safety orientation with KDFN Occupational Health & Safety Specialist or designate;
  • Safety training including Standard First Aid/CPR, Food Safe Level 1, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) and WHMIS;

Job Requirements

  • Physical ability to sit, stand, lift, push and pull, bend, and reach as required to safely and effectively perform job duties
  • Physically capable of providing assistance to individuals with mild to severe mobility challenges
  • Ability to deliver care within clients’ homes while demonstrating professionalism, adaptability, and respect for diverse lifestyles and living environments
  • Ability to travel within Whitehorse and surrounding areas as required
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining strict confidentiality and complying with all applicable privacy legislation, including HIPMA
  • Ability to work effectively in challenging situations and with clients who may present complex or difficult behaviours Possible exposure to allergens such as pets, tobacco

Salary:                                $53,544.40-$88,160.80 ($29.42 – $48.44 per hour) Level 4 *Plus benefits
