NR Steward Intern - Term

Salary:  Level 2 Step 1 ($27.36 hourly)

This position will expose citizens to numerous opportunities within the natural resources field and provide them with unique experiences working within the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in (TH) Traditional Territory (TT) for Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in people. The Natural Resources Steward Intern will be assisting the Natural Resources Department with a wide variety of tasks and duties: program-planning, field work administration duties, detailed field notes and photos, compiled field reporting, assistance with TH culture camps, community harvesting/ butchering, etc. The focus of this position will be on field work, however office related tasks related to reporting and recording field observations, and other office duties, will be required. The position will also be expected to attend events which require overnights in a camp-like setting and assisting with the Klondike River Chinook Salmon Sonar.   

An Eligibility List may be established from this competition – the duration of the eligibility list may be up to 12 months. The eligibility list may be used to fill future permanent full-time, permanent part-time, temporary full-time, temporary part-time, term, or auxiliary on-call vacancies within the same department and classification based on the organizational needs by going the next highest ranked candidate until the eligibility list expires.

Essential Qualifications:  

  • Must be a TH Citizen aged 18 or older.
  • Must have an interest in the field of Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Biology, Geography, or related field.  
  • Basic knowledge of computers.  
  • Cross cultural awareness, sensitivity and understanding.  
  • Bear Aware training or willingness to obtain certification. 
  • Willingness to take courses such as ATV Training, Boat Safety and others that may arise for the position. 

Assets:  

  • Database management an asset 
  • Good note-taking skills are an asset.  
  • Experience operating an ATV and motorboat is considered an asset. 

Conditions of Employment: 

  • Bear Aware training or willingness to obtain certification. 
  • Willingness to take courses such as ATV Training, Boat Safety and others that may arise for the position.  
  • Willingness to work evenings and/or weekends as required
