Job Summary:

The incumbent monitors, operates, tests, troubleshoots, inspects, maintains, services, repairs and installs a wide variety of mechanical equipment and systems in City facilities on a scheduled and emergency basis.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Monitors, operates and performs mechanical inspection, trouble shooting, installation, servicing and repairs a wide variety of mechanical equipment in City facilities, on a scheduled and emergency basis, including heating, ventilation, cooling, plumbing, refrigeration systems and electrical controls.
2. Maintains, operates and ensures efficient and safe operation of a variety of building systems and controls.
3. Provides assistance to the Electrical and Carpentry building maintenance crews.
4. Prepares written building mechanical assessment reports and maintains accurate records.
5. Obtains cost estimates and makes recommendations on the most efficient option.
6. Oversees capital, operating, maintenance and emergency projects, including supervision of contractors, safety, etc.
7. Operates and maintains a fully stocked service van, including organizing and tracking an inventory of tools and equipment to ensure maintenance and repair tasks readiness.
8. Follow, so far as is reasonably practicable, safety procedures established and standards.
9. Acts as Supervisor, Building Maintenance, Mechanical as assigned.
10. Other related duties.

Position Requirements 

Working Conditions:

Work four 10-hour shifts per week or five 8-hour shifts. On call evenings and weekends on a rotational basis is required. Exposure to disagreeable conditions such as temperature extremes, fumes, dust, noise, human waste, bodily fluids, hazardous chemicals, refrigerants, fats and oils. Required to work from ladders/lifts, roofs and in confined spaces.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Red Seal Journey certification - Millwright, Pipefitter, Plumber, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic, Gas Fitter OR Oil Burner Mechanic.
• Multiple red seal certification is an asset.
• 4th Class Power Engineer is an asset.
• 3 years related experience and 6 months on the job training.
• Class 5 driver’s license.
• Knowledge of National, Territorial and Municipal Building codes including mechanical refrigeration, boiler, pressure vessel and pressure piping, NFPA, SMCNA, ASHRAE, oil burning, fire code etc.
• Knowledge of the Yukon Workers’ Compensation and Safety Act and applicable regulations.
• Proven skills relating to communications, consensus building, human relations and problem solving.
• Ability to foster and maintain effective relationships among peers and/or stakeholders.
• Proven written and oral communication skills to develop and present reports.
• Good organizational skills, prioritizing and ability to multitask with minimal supervision.
• Ability to work with little supervision and function in a multidiscipline environment.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Certifications required within one year may include but not limited to: Arena operator’s course level 2; Confined Space Entry; Standard First Aid Level C with CPR; lock-out/tag-out; aerial Lift; electrical safety course; WHMIS & TDG; conflict resolution, Ainsworth/Delta Controls training; fall arrest; Hazard Assessment and Controls; SCBA, 5th Class Power Engineer etc.

Examples of Equipment to Operate:

Vehicle, aerial lift, bucket truck, electrical, mechanical and carpentry tools, calibration and testing equipment, communication equipment and computers including software for computerized maintenance systems, Microsoft Office Suite and computer with applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel and ERP Work Tech.
