Parks Maintenance Person

Job Summary:

The incumbent operates and maintains the City’s parks, trails, green spaces, outdoor facilities, playgrounds and cemeteries in the City. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Operates and maintains parks, trails, boulevards, playgrounds, campgrounds, the Frank Slim Building, outdoor structures and equipment. 
  2. Assists with installation of outdoor structures, implementation of landscaping and installation and maintenance of irrigation systems.
  3. Follows, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standards.
  4. Responds to public inquiries and report complaints. 
  5. Monitors park users and responds to emergency situations.
  6. Enforces established standards of conduct and decorum and appropriate use of equipment.
  7. Prepares grave sites, performs interments and finishes sites, including installing headstones.
  8. Assists with implementing special events and Parks & Recreation programs.
  9. Acts as Crew Leader and backfills for Shipyards Park Labourer and Outdoor Rinks Maintenance Person and as assigned. 
  10. Other related duties.

POSITION REQUIREMENTSWorking Conditions:

Regular hours of work are four 10 hour shifts per week between 0500-0100 Sunday through Saturday. Exposed to extreme temperatures and inclement weather when working outside. Frequent requirement to work from heights and around high voltage.

Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • Completion Grade 10
  • 1-year related landscaping and maintenance experience in a commercial setting and 3 months of on-the-job training
  • Standard First Aid, CPR Level C  - 16 hours
  • Class 5 Driver's License
  • Fall Arrest - 7 hours
  • Traffic Control course - 14 hours
  • Electrical Overhead Wire course - 7 hours
  • Basic related trade experience is an asset (carpentry, mechanical, etc.)
  • Must be able to lift heavy (greater than 23 kg) items on a daily basis

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Grounds and maintenance equipment, irrigation equipment, water truck, excavator, bobcat trailers, chainsaw, power tools, vehicle, custodial equipment, basic carpentry and small power tools, general office equipment (Microsoft suite, ERP, etc.
