The incumbents coordinates, installs, operates, inspects, repairs, and maintains the water distribution, and waste/storm water collection systems.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Coordinate, install, operate, inspect, maintains and repairs the water distribution and waste/storm water collection systems, including but not limited to:
- laying and backfilling of pipes;
- Adjusting, grouting, and benching manholes and catch basins;
- Clearing plugged or frozen pipes and appurtenances; and
- Locating water, sewer, and storm mains and appurtenances.
- Direct, assign, check and maintain the flow of work of staff assigned to their crew and provide input to performance appraisals.
- Maintain accurate records including location and type of water/sewer breaks, manpower, equipment, as-builts, materials/supplies, etc.
- Plan and implement annual City-wide Uni-directional flushing program.
- Prepare estimates for water/sewer installations and/or repairs.
- Read and interpret maps, blue print and service records.
- Transport equipment, materials and supplies to work sites.
- Ensure that adequate inventory levels are maintained.
- Respond to public inquiries and report complaints.
- Provide input into service standards, policies, and procedures.
- Acts as Utility Systems Supervisor as assigned.
- Follows, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standards.
- Other related duties.

Working Conditions:Continuous exposure to disagreeable conditions such as dust/dirt, fumes/odours, inclement weather, temperature extremes, bodily waste/fluids, human waste, fats, oils, rancid food grease, raw sewage, hazardous chemicals, work in confined spaces and noise requiring hearing protection.
Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:
- Completion Grade 12 or G.E.D.
- Level 2 certificate in Water Distribution & Wastewater Collection
- 1 year on-the-job training
- Class 3 driver's license with air endorsement
- Confined Space Entry certificate and Breathing Apparatus Operation (17 hours)
- Chlorine Handling (35 hours)
- Cross Connection and Backflow Prevention (35 hours)
- Yukon Electrical Safety Course (7 hours)
- Rigging and Hoisting (14 hours)
- TDG & WHMIS (10.5 hours)
- Standard First Aid, CPR Level C (14 hours)
- Trench Safety and Fall Arrest (14 hours)
- Traffic Control (16 hours)
- Proven ability to concentrate, pay attention to detail, organize, priority set, and be a team player.
- Ability to work with little supervision and function in a multidiscipline environment.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Examples of Equipment to Operate:
Service trucks and van, trucks, ride-on compactors, skid steer, truck/van steamer, hand tapping tools, metal detectors, dewatering pumps, various generators, electric rota-router, jack hammer, electric winch/crane, hot water thaw pumps, manual sewer tapes, tampers, power and hand tools, breathing apparatus, gas detectors, winch/tripod/harness, fork lift, heaters, and computer with applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, ERP and a maintenance management system.
