Parks Maintenance Person 1

Job Summary:

The incumbent operates and maintains the City’s parks, trails, green spaces, outdoor facilities, playgrounds, and cemeteries in the City. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Operate and maintain parks, trails, boulevards, playgrounds, campgrounds, outdoor structures and equipment. 
  2. Assists with the installation of outdoor structures, the implementation of landscaping and the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems.
  3. Respond to public inquiries and report complaints. 
  4. Monitor Park users and respond to emergency situations.
  5. Enforce established standards of conduct, decorum, and appropriate use of equipment.
  6. Prepare gravesites, perform interments and finish the site, including installing headstones.
  7. Assist with implementing special events and Parks & Recreation programs.
  8. Follow, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standards.
  9. Act as Crew Leader as assigned. 
  10. Other related duties.

Position Requirements
Working Conditions:

Exposed to extreme temperatures and inclement weather when working outside. Frequent requirement to work from heights and around high voltage

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Completion Grade 10
  • 1 year related landscaping and/or maintenance experience in a commercial setting and 3 months on-the-job training
  • Standard First Aid, CPR Level C  - 16 hours
  • Class 5 Driver's License
  • Basic related trade experience is an asset (carpentry, mechanical, etc)
  • Must be able to lift heavy (greater than 23 kg) items on a daily basis

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Examples of Equipment to Operate:

Grounds and maintenance equipment, including irrigation equipment, an excavator, a bobcat, trailers, a chainsaw, power tools, a vehicle, custodial equipment, basic carpentry tools, and general office equipment (Microsoft suite, electronic mail, smartphone, etc.).
