$138,602.78 - $185,400.28

YESAB conducts environmental and socio-economic assessments of projects before they are approved by the governing body. Eligibility
- A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from a recognized institution.
- Membership in good standing, or eligibility for membership, with the Law Society of Yukon.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Act (YESAA), administrative law, and environmental or resource management law is required.
- Knowledge of Yukon First Nations, land claim and self-government agreements, and associated governance structures is an asset.
- Experience providing legal advice in a public sector, regulatory, or board/tribunal environment is an asset.
- Strong legal research, analytical, and professional writing skills are required.
Legal Counsel, Panel, reporting to the Executive Director, will be part of the legal team providing legal services for the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board (YESAB). This position will primarily be focused on legal services related to panel processes. The incumbent will also be providing legal services on broader assessment and corporate matters for YESAB. Legal Counsel, Panel is responsible for:
- Providing legal advice and written legal opinions to the Executive Director, Board Chair and Board members, Panel Chair and Panel members, Executive Committee, and staff on matters related to legislation, policy interpretation, governance, and Board operations.
- Interpreting and providing guidance on the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Act (YESAA), regulations, and other relevant legislation impacting YESAB’s Panel process and the Board’s mandate.
- Conducting legal research and analysis on issues primarily related to the Panel process, as well as other environmental and socio-economic assessment, administrative law, contract law, and related legal matters.
- Assisting in the development and review of Board policies, procedures, correspondence, and governance documents.
- Reviewing and providing legal advice on contracts, agreements, and other legal instruments entered into by the Board or Panel.
- Providing legal support related to litigation or judicial review matters, including coordinating with external legal counsel when required.
- On occasion, delivering orientation or training to staff, Panel members, Board members on legal matters related to the Board’s mandate and operations.
