Labourer, Waste Services

Job Summary:

The incumbent provides assistance to the Waste Services or Compost Leadhand in completing their assigned tasks. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Provides general labourer duties including but not limited to litter clean-up, shoveling, sweeping, clearing brush & snow, etc.
2. Transports materials, assists with cart deliveries and repairs.
3. Accepts and consolidates household hazardous waste from public drop-off.
4. Observes and reports issues to appropriate staff.
5. Prepares and maintains accurate records.
6. Performs flagging and traffic control duties.
7. Cleans and organizes various areas of the Waste Management Facility.
8. Directs facility users to appropriate disposal areas.
9. Acts as Operator, Waste Services as assigned.
10. Follows, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standards.
11. Other related duties.

Position Requirements 

Working Conditions:

Exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, odours, bodily fluids, waste, hazardous materials, temperature extremes, inclement weather, noise requiring hearing protection. Ability to lift up to 23 kg on a regular basis.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

•  Grade 10.
•  6 months previous related experience
•  3 months on the job training.
•  Class 5 drivers license
•  Standard First Aid Certificate with CPR Level C.
•  Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with the public and providing assistance in a variety of situations.

Additional certification required within one and a half years of employment includes but not limited to:

WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG)

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Examples of Equipment to Operate:

Pickup truck, 1-ton truck, hand and power tools, chainsaw, cut-off saw, water pumps, generators, composting and landfill equipment, communications equipment and computer applications such as Outlook and ERP software.
