Job Summary:

The incumbent provides assistance to the Waste Services or Compost Leadhand in completing their assigned tasks. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provide general labourer duties including but not limited to: shoveling, clearing brush, litter clean-up, etc.
  2. Transport materials.
  3. Observe and report issues to appropriate staff.
  4. Prepare and maintain accurate records.
  5. Perform flagging and traffic control duties.
  6. Follow, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standards.
  7. Act as Heavy Equipment Operator 1 as assigned.
  8. Other related duties.

Position Requirements

Working Conditions:

Exposure to dust/dirt, fumes/odours, bodily fluids/waste, temperature extreme, inclement weather, noise requiring hearing protection when performing labouring duties. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly.

Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • Grade 10.
  • Class 5 driver’s license with air endorsement. Class 3 is an asset.
  • 1 year related experience operating farming or heavy equipment and 3 months on the job training.
  • Knowledge of composting process and operations is an asset.
  • Standard First Aid Certificate with CPR Level C.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with the public and providing assistance in a variety of situations.

Additional certification required within one and a half years of employment includes but not limited to:

WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG); Traffic Control Course; Confined Space and Electrical Safety Course, etc.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Examples of Equipment to Operate:

Composting equipment (similar to farming equipment), pickup truck, hand tools, bobcat, cut-off saw, chainsaw, 1 ton flat bed truck, water pumps, generators, hand and power tools, fork lift, winch/tripod harness, communications equipment and computer applications such as Outlook, Word & ERP.
