Kitchen Assistant - Term
Department: Governance & Executive Operations
Location: Tr’ondek Hwech’in Offices – Dawson, YT

Standard Hours Bi-Weekly:  45
Start Date:  Immediately
End Date:  April 30, 2026 with possible extension
Salary:  Level 3 Step 1 ($30.88 hourly)

Reporting to the Events and Consultations Coordinator, the incumbent assists in the preparation and cooking of food for the TH Government’s Meals on Wheels program, Community luncheons and other catered events (for example, Council Meetings, General Assemblies, the annual Community Christmas Dinner, Moosehide Gathering, Elders camps and gatherings, Citizen consultations, Department programs and workshops). Duties include assisting with menu planning, grocery shopping, food preparation, baking, cooking, assisting with butchering, meal packaging, tracking inventory, supervision and coordination of cook helpers, and clean up.   

An Eligibility List may be established from this competition – the duration of the eligibility list may be up to 12 months. The eligibility list may be used to fill future permanent full-time, permanent part-time, temporary full-time, temporary part-time, term, or auxiliary on-call vacancies within the same department and classification based on the organizational needs by going the next highest ranked candidate until the eligibility list expires.

Essential Qualifications:  

  • Cooking courses or related programs. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
  • Experience preparing high meal output (150 + meals per day) in a commercial kitchen environment.
  • Experience in cooking traditional foods.
  • Completion of food safety courses (or willingness to obtain).
  • Thorough knowledge of TH meal programs, events and kitchen processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare traditional foods in culturally appropriate ways.
  • Completion of food safety courses (or willingness to obtain).
  • Knowledge and understanding of Northern Canada Food Guide is an asset.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Criminal Records Check.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and clear Driver’s Abstract (preferred).
  • Standard First Aid, or willingness to obtain within six months.
  • Food Safe, or willingness to obtain upon hire.
  • WHMIS, or willingness to obtain upon hire.
  • TH101 Cultural Awareness training.
