Instructor/Lifeguard

Job Summary:

The incumbent provides constant safety supervision of patrons, instructs aquatic programs, provides emergency care for minor and major first aid situations, mentors new staff, provides support to the administrative and maintenance staff, tests and maintains water quality, and assists with the implementation of special events.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Monitors pool users and enforces established standards of conduct and decorum, responds to major and minor emergency situations, responds to enquiries from public and fQllows established safety and emergency procedures.
  2. Provides aquatic instruction for patrons; monitors activities being taught and ensures the quality of the programming meets standards.
  3. Prepares and implements lesson plans and instructional material, prepares and distributes candidate progress reports, and prepares and submits statistical reports/records. Mentors lesson volunteers assigned to their programs.
  4. Performs light custodial maintenance and minor repairs to facility and equipment.
  5. Assists in the inventory and stocking of first aid and program supplies.
  6. Performs water tests and keeps maintenance records.
  7. Performs basic computer skills required for program registration and entering records, and assists with administrative duties as assigned.
  8. Receives and responds to questions, concerns, and complaints from patrons; determines issues and resolves or refers to higher-level staff as appropriate.
  9. Works collaboratively with participants and aquatic staff to ensure a positive learning environment.
  10. Participates in training sessions as part of maintaining required certifications.
  11. Under the direction of the Aquatic Supervisor, assists in developing or implementing specialized aquatic activities and events.
  12. Acts as Head Guard as assigned.
  13. Follows, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standards.
  14. Other related duties.

Working Conditions:

Exposure to constant noise, extreme temperatures when in and out of the water, and humidity in the pool environment.

Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • Completion of Grade 10 or 16 years of age
  • 2 months Lifeguard and Instructor experience
  • National Lifeguard Pool Option (NL)
  • Standard First Aid/CPR Level C
  • Workplace Haz.ardous Materials Information Systems certification (WHMIS)
  • Lifesaving Instructor certification (LSI)
  • Swim Instructor certification- Lifesaving Society (SI)
  • Aqua Fitness Certification (WaterArt, CALA, BCRPA or equivalent)

An equivalent combination of education training and experience may be considered.

Examples of Equipment to Operate:

General office equipment including computer skills to operate software programs related to intranets, spreadsheets, word processing, electronic mail, etc.
