Are you interested in teaching/mentoring future health care workers?

Yukon University is looking for qualified individuals, on a casual/sessional basis, to teach courses in the Health Care Assistant Program throughout the Winter 2024 and Fall 2024 terms. We are currently seeking out instructors for the following courses:

COMM 125 – Interpersonal Relationships & Communication Skills

Through the use of self-reflection, theory, and experience, this course will help students develop effective communication skills for use in interpersonal relationships, workplace and team environments, particularly in the North. [Winter Term 2024: Jan-April]

HCA 100 – Health & Healing A

This course introduces students to a theoretical framework for practice and the foundational philosophical values required for competent practice as a HCA. Concepts of caring, care-planning and person-centred care as they relate to health and healing are explored, as well as effective problem-solving approaches necessary for practice. [Winter Term 2024: Jan-April]

HCA 102 – Introduction to Practice

This course provides an introduction to the role of the HCA within the Yukon health care system. Students will be introduced to the ethical and legal issues in health care, the healthcare team and the roles and functions of HCA within the team. Self-reflective skills
for practice and effective job-finding approaches are also included in the course. [Winter
Term 2024: Jan-April]

HCA 160 – Clinical Placement - Long Term Care

This Practicum course gives students the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills
they have learned in HCA theory/lab courses to give safe, competent care to individuals
living in long term care. Students are buddied with appropriate Care Aide staff and
supervised by the practicum course instructor. Instructors are on-site with students in
Long Term Care facilities during student shifts. [Winter Term 2024: Jan-April. Fall Term
2024: Sept-Dec. & Winter Term 2025: Jan-May]

HCA 150 – Clinical Placement - Home Care

This Practicum course gives students the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills
learned in other HCA theory/lab courses to give safe, competent care to individuals living
at home in the community. Students are buddied with Home Support Workers (employed
by a local Home Care agency) and supervised by the practicum course instructor.
Instructors check-in, meet regularly with students but do not go with students into client’s
homes. [Winter Term 2024: Jan-May]

HCA 140 – Healing 3 A – Personal Care and Assistance

This lab skills course offers students the opportunity to acquire personal care and
assistance skills within the HCA role. In-class theory and supervised laboratory
experiences assist students to learn basic caregiving skills which they will use in their
practicum experience. [Fall Term 2024: Sept-Dec.]
