Job Overview
The Financial Manager is a key member of the management team, responsible for overseeing the financial health and sustainability of the organization. This role blends operational oversight with strategic leadership, ensuring both the day-to-day accuracy of our financial systems and the long-term viability of our funding streams.
This position supports the bookkeeper, working closely with the Executive Director, policy, HR, and finance Subcommittees of the Board to align financial practices with organizational goals.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Oversight & Reporting
- Lead and monitor day-to-day financial operations, in collaboration with the Bookkeeper.
- Ensure timely and accurate reporting to funders, the Executive Director, and the Board.
- Prepare monthly financial statements, manage cash flow, and oversee long-term budget forecasts.
- Prepare and process bi-monthly payroll for large staff team, including processing payroll remittances to Canada Revenue Agency.
- Support annual audit preparation and liaise with external auditors as required.
- Maintain financial systems in compliance with internal policies, Canada Revenue Agency guidelines, and Canadian generally accepted accounting principles.
- Foster a culture of accountability, clarity, and collaboration within the finance team and organization
Funding Strategy & Grant Management
- Proactively research, identify, and apply for funding opportunities that align with Safe at Home’s mission and growth priorities.
- Track and manage reporting requirements for all grants and funding agreements, ensuring timely reporting on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director to align new funding proposals with organizational strategy.
Policy, Planning & Leadership
- Collaborate with policy analyst and supervisory team as needed, to review financial procedures as they related to operational policies and funding eligibility requirements.
- Support the alignment of financial tracking within HIFIS (Homeless Individual and Family Information System and Excel, with the support of the HIFIS Project Manager.
- Contribute to organizational planning, budgeting, and scenario forecasting as a member of the management team.
- Provide training and support to program staff to ensure financial literacy across departments.
Governance & Compliance
- Provide financial updates and recommendations to the Board’s Finance Subcommittee and attend Board meetings at minimum quarterly, or as requested.
- Ensure internal controls are followed and updated as necessary to safeguard the organization’s resources and reputation.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and discretion regarding all organizational finances and records.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; equivalent experience considered.
- Minimum 2–3 years of financial management experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
- Experience with grant writing, budget development, and complex reporting for multi-source funding.
- Proficiency in Sage, Excel, and financial systems relevant to Canadian nonprofit organizations.

Work Environment
This position is primarily based in-office in Whitehorse, with some off-site meetings and occasional flexibility for hybrid work arrangements.
