Electrician, Building Maintenance

Job Summary:

The incumbent monitors, operates, tests, troubleshoots, maintains, services, repairs and installs a wide variety of electrical equipment, systems and controls in City facilities on a scheduled and emergency basis.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Install, operate, monitor, test, troubleshoot, modify, repair and maintain a wide variety of electrical equipment, and base building wiring, on a scheduled and emergency basis including, but are not limited to: building climate systems, lighting and power systems, emergency and life safety systems also communication systems.
  2. Maintain and ensure efficient and safe operation of a variety of building systems and controls.
  3. Update and maintain Computerized Maintenance Management System and provide input into safe work procedures.
  4. Provide assistance to both the Mechanical and Carpentry building maintenance crews.
  5. Maintain an inventory of supplies, order and purchase replacements in a timely fashion in accordance with City procurement processes
  6. Prepare written electrical assessment reports and maintain accurate records.
  7. Obtain cost estimates and make recommendation on most efficient option.
  8. Oversee capital, operating, maintenance and emergency projects including supervision of contractors, safety, etc.
  9. Maintain inventory of tools and ensure they are maintained in an acceptable state of repair and safe to operate.
  10. Act as Supervisor, Building Maintenance as assigned.
  11. Follow, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standards.
  12. Other related duties.

Position Requirements

Working Conditions:

Work either four 10-hour shifts per week or five 8-hour shifts per week, Monday to Friday. On-call evenings and weekends on a rotational basis is required. Exposure to disagreeable conditions such as temperature extremes, fumes, dust, noise, human waste, bodily fluids, hazardous chemicals, refrigerants, fats and oils. Required to work from ladders/lifts, roofs and in confined spaces.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Journey Electrician certification.
  • 5th Class Power Engineer (207 hours).
  • 3 years related experience & 6 months on-the-job training. 
  • Knowledge of National, Territorial and Municipal Building codes including fire alarms.
  • Knowledge of Canadian Electrical code.
  • Standard First Aid with CPR Level C (14 hours), WHMIS & Transportation of Dangerous Goods (17.5), Hazard Assessment & Control (7 hours), Confined Space (14 hours), Fall Arrest (7 hours), Aerial Lift Training (16 hours), High Voltage Safety course (7 hours), Chlorine Handling (40 hours), Delta/ESC Controls training (40 hours), Johnson Controls (40 hours), and Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (7 hours) - Totals 209.5 hours. 
  • Proven ability to concentrate, pay attention to detail, organize, priority set and be a team player.
  • Ability to work with little supervision and function in a multidiscipline environment.
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Examples of Equipment to Operate:

Vehicle, aerial lift, bucket truck, electrical and mechanical tools, calibration/ testing equipment, communications equipment, basic carpentry and plumbing tools, calibration and testing equipment, plumbing, carpentry and basic electrical tools, communications equipment, and computers, including software for computerized maintenance systems, Microsoft Office Suite and computer with applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel and ERP Work Tech.
