Overview
Queer Yukon Society is excited to hire a Drop-In Coordinator for our Dawson City location. This position will be the first point of contact with the organization in Dawson, and is ideal for someone with strong customer service or active listening skills, an interest in harm reduction and de-escalation, and a commitment to creating a welcoming, safe community hub for all members of our community.
This can either be a part-time role keeping our Drop-In open over the Fall and Winter, or a larger role helping plan and implement the future of QYS’ Dawson programming through March 2026 and beyond. We want to hear from you and have a conversation about what could work!
Duration of contract: 6 months - 18 months depending on availability
Location: Dawson City
Hours: 6-8 hours a week. For the right candidate, there could be more hours for outreach and visioning work, with flexibility to grow into a 25-35 hour/week role.
Wage: $40.12/hour
Benefits: 2.5% pay in lieu of benefits, 3 weeks paid vacation annually, generous sick and personal leave.
With higher weekly hours, enrollment in the group benefits plan may be possible.
Equipment: Employees will be provided necessary equipment to complete tasks (e.g. a laptop and phone).
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate, manage and host a weekly Drop In program at Queer Yukon Society’s Dawson City location
- Orient space users to the physical space and relevant policies, and provide a safe, welcoming space for all visitors.
- Support community members accessing QYS’s library, gender gear and direct aid supplies, and guide them to access other programs and services.
- De-escalate tense or conflictual situations in a way that promotes learning, harm reduction and community safety.
- Coordinate with other QYS staff or community volunteers to ensure adequate staffing of the drop-in space at all times.
- Collect and record various anecdotal and statistical data for program evaluation and reporting.
- Respond to phone, email and in-person requests regarding the Dawson City location and direct them to other QYS staff as needed.
If hours allow:
- Contribute to visioning and development of the role as needs evolve, including leading engagement sessions with Dawson residents/partners
- Lead other programming in Dawson in line with QYS campaigns, such as Trans Awareness Week, Dawson Pride
- Other tasks to be agreed upon.
Some evenings and weekend work will be required, with advance notice provided.
Qualifications and Skills:
- A strong knowledge of or first-hand experience with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
- Anti-racist and/or any other anti-oppression training or experience.
- A strong knowledge or experience with Yukon First Nations communities.
- Experience facilitating drop-in or community spaces.
- Experience working with people in crisis.
- Experience creating safe environments for people with different experiences to interact.
- Knowledge of a second (or additional) language would be a strong asset, particularly a Yukon First Nations language, French, Tagalog, and/or ASL.
- Competent using computers and basic software programs.
