FireSmart Coordinator - Community and Recreation Services

Job Summary:

The FireSmart Coordinator is responsible for leading the implementation of the City of Whitehorse Wildfire Risk Reduction Strategy. The position will facilitate FireSmart activities, update policy, and collaborate with City departments, the Yukon Government (YG), and First Nation Governments.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Coordinate and facilitate the development and implementation of Wildfire Risk Reduction activities within the City of Whitehorse.

2. Complete in-depth analysis of wildfire prevention data and develop policy and program options for decision-makers.

3. Liaise and collaborate with City departments, government agencies, and First Nations government in the development of wildfire risk reduction activities for the City of Whitehorse.

4. Coordinate and conduct FireSmart Home Ignition Assessments within Whitehorse.

5. Respond to inquiries and engage with the public on wildfire risk reduction initiatives

6. Maintains project management tools to ensure effective, on-time, on-budget project delivery, including assigned staff and contractors.

Position Requirements
Working Conditions:

The majority of the work is performed under normal office conditions. Generally works 7-hour shifts Monday to Friday. However, evening work may be required from time to time. The incumbent will be required to conduct FireSmart audits on properties and conduct site visits on wildfire prevention activities around Whitehorse. This will result in potential exposure to dust, dirt, insects, and inclement weather when conducting FireSmart and wildfire prevention activities within the community.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Diploma in a natural resource management-related field (e.g., Forestry, Geography or Natural Resource Management). An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • A minimum of three years of related experience, including facilitation and program management experience.
  • On-the-job experience - 6 months.
  • Valid Class 5 Yukon Driver's License.
  • Knowledge of forest practices, wildfire prevention, and FireSmart principles.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing multiple projects, building and maintaining cooperative and productive partnerships, and effectively negotiating and consulting with multiple external stakeholders.

  • Ability to use information technologies (computers, mobile devices, etc), including familiarity with presentation development tools, education programs, and social media applications.
