What’s YESAB?
The Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board (YESAB) is an independent body established under the Umbrella Final Agreement and YESAA legislation in 2003. YESAB conducts environmental and socio-economic assessments of projects before they are approved by the governing body.

Our purpose is to conduct neutral, timely, efficient and effective environmental and socio-economic assessments in the Yukon.
We are a small and passionate team who loves the work that we do and the territory in which we live. We are inspired by different ways of working and welcome critical thinking and diverse experience to our teams.

A hiring priority will apply for qualified candidates of Yukon First Nation ancestry, with a preference for qualified candidates of Canadian Indigenous ancestry. Secondments from Yukon First Nation or other governments will also be considered.

What we offer:

  • Comprehensive benefit coverage.
  • Professional development opportunities.
  • Retirement savings contributions.
  • Paid vacation and flexible work options.

Work with a team committed to conducting neutral assessments in the Yukon that contribute to protecting the environment and the social, economic, and cultural well-being of Yukon First Nations and residents.

Eligibility

  • An undergraduate degree and/or post-secondary training in environmental science, social science or a similar field of study is preferred.  Relevant work experience may be considered.
  • General knowledge of the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Act, as well as Yukon First Nations and First Nation Agreements, is required.
  • Experience collecting, organizing and analyzing data is required.
  • Experience working in a First Nation government is considered an asset.

The Assessment Officer, reporting to the Manager, Designated Office, is part of our dynamic assessment team and will be responsible for:

  • Conducting environmental and socio-economic assessments
  • Preparing detailed evidence-based recommendation reports that present assessment review outcomes, including identifying environmental and socio-economic effects of projects
  • Ensuring that the Manager of the Designated Office is thoroughly briefed on all assessment details
  • Remaining up to date on new and emerging trends of assessment methodology
  • Conducting independent research on assessment topics
  • Ensuring that participants understand the assessment review process and how to best participate in that process
  • Engaging with communities, Proponents, and First Nation, Federal and Territorial Governments
