Department: Fleet and Transportation MaintenanceJob Summary:
Under the direction of the Supervisor, Fleet Maintenance, the incumbent inspects, repairs, services and maintains all City-owned heavy duty, light duty and specialized equipment, and automotive vehicles.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Completes inspection, testing, repairs, servicing, maintenance and repair of all City vehicles and equipment including light, medium and heavy duty in accordance with prescribed policies, directives and procedures.
- Maintains, operates and ensures efficient and safe operation of a variety of heavy duty, automotive and auxiliary equipment.
- Prepares written mechanical assessment reports and maintain accurate records.
- Performs semi-annual inspections of Heavy-Duty Trucks, Specialized Equipment and Transit Buses as required by the National Safety Code.
- Ensures that all mechanical tools and equipment are in an acceptable state of repair and safe to use.
- Directs, assigns, checks and maintains the flow of work of apprentice technicians and provides input to performance performance appraisals. Orients City of Whitehorse staff on the basic operation and maintenance of equipment as required.
- Maintains computerized maintenance and asset management system for all fleet vehicle service and maintenance requirements.
- Follows, and ensures that assigned staff follow, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standards.
- Act as Leadhand, Equipment Maintenance as assigned.
- Other related duties.

1Position Requirements
Working Conditions:Exposure to dust/dirt, fumes /odours, grease, oil, dangerous substances (petroleum products) and noise on a daily basis and temperature extremes/inclement weather when working in the shop and overseeing emergency repairs on site and travelling between various work locations. Occasional exposure to bodily fluids and wastes when repairing vactor trucks and garbage packers.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Journey Heavy Duty Technician, Journey Truck & Transport Technician (Journey Automotive Technician with Heavy Duty/Truck Transport experience may be considered).
- National Vehicle Code Safety Inspection Certificate.
- Class 3 drivers’ license with air endorsement. Class 2 drivers’ license is an asset.
- 4 years related experience and 1 year on the job training with CPR.
- Strong knowledge of computer based systems, including vehicle technical diagnostic programs.
- Proven ability to concentrate, pay attention to detail, organize, set priorities, be goal orientated and be a team player.
- Must be able to work with little supervision and function in a multidiscipline environment.
- Ability to lift in excess of 23 kg for short periods of time on a daily basis.
Certifications required within one year may include but not limited to:
- Standard First Aid Level C with CPR.
- Lock-out/Tag-out;
- Crane Operator;
- WHMIS.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Examples of Equipment to Operate:
All classes of vehicles and equipment, full range of mechanical tools/equipment for the purposes of inspecting, testing, servicing, repairing and maintaining vehicles and equipment, diagnostic software applications and computer with applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel and ERP Work Tech.
