Term - Adult Language Teacher (Full Time or Part-Time)

 

Location: Old Crow, YT

Reporting to the Language Specialist, this position is responsible for learning language and managing language teachers and teaching adult language courses.

 

Main Duties

• Assist with curriculum development, language nest and other language initiatives
• Recruit and train Gwitch'in language teachers
• Schedule, coordinate all preparations, and conduct adult language classes
• Coordinate and manage co-teachers
• Track student assessments and analyze data

 

Job, Knowledge and Skills:

• Grade 12 or equivalency, and relevant Vuntut Gwitchin cultural and language experience
• Knowledge of Vuntut Gwitchin heritage and cultural values
• Basic Knowledge and understanding of modern Gwich’in language – oral and written
• Teacher Training in Direct Acquisition Method is considered an asset
• A commitment to attend training for teaching methods and language teaching, and complete levels of the Gwich’in language
• Ability to work independently and as a team player
• Ability to assume responsibility and meet deadlines
• Strong time management and organizational skills
• Ability to work with Elders and speakers and learners
• Ability to use email, Word, Excel, and video or audio systems
• Ability to increase Gwich’in speaking through classes or mentoring

 

                Working Conditions:

This position is generally located in an office environment. Some field trips in varying seasons are required.
