About Us

The Department of Education Schools Division is a team committed to delivering high-quality, inclusive and experiential education to students across the territory. We provide collective leadership to 20 Yukon Education elementary and secondary schools and programs in the territory, ensuring each school community is supported in providing the best learning experience to every student. We partner with Yukon First Nations governments and collaborate with various education stakeholders, including school councils, families, non-governmental organizations and others to strengthen our education system.

Yukon First Nations governments are an important partner in the governance of the territory, and their traditional territories cover almost all the land in the Yukon. There are 14 Yukon First Nations and several transboundary Indigenous groups who have traditional territory in the Yukon. Yukon First Nations ways of knowing, doing and being are integral to our school communities and student learning. Yukon Education schools provide experiential learning programs with a Yukon First Nations lens. Our work is guided by implementing actions that embrace diversity, equity and inclusion.

About the Role
As Superintendent of Education, you will play a pivotal role in steering educational leadership and strategic direction across Yukon's school system, including focusing on the unique challenges and opportunities presented by rural programming. Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister, Schools Division in the Department of Education, this role is instrumental in the collective governance of schools within the territory. Responsibilities encompass a wide range of activities from the planning and development of educational strategies, policies, and budgets to leading the effective implementation of initiatives within the schools.

Organizational responsibilities for the Superintendent include oversight of staffing in schools, and ensuring the schools' goals and objectives are communicated effectively to education councils, First Nations, principals, and community stakeholders. By fostering a collaborative team environment, the Superintendent ensures the efficient and effective delivery of educational programs and services, thereby enhancing the educational experience for students and communities throughout the Yukon.

The Superintendent collaborates with Yukon Education staff on system-wide learning initiatives, curriculum implementation and assessment programs, including participating in evaluations to assess their effectiveness and identify areas for improvement. Through these efforts, the Superintendent of Education ensures that the Yukon's public school system remains responsive to the needs of its communities and that learning communities are created where every student can learn in a good way.
