Description:

Are you comfortable with numbers and ‘real-world math’? Do you help others to understand counting, patterns, measurement, money or graphs? Our Math Advocates do and we are seeking additional members to join our Numeracy Team! We are interested in hearing from prospective employees in all Yukon communities. You don’t need to be a math whiz to apply, but you should enjoy math and helping others. We are looking for candidates who are comfortable with supporting math in grades 2-7. If you are comfortable in higher levels of math, that’s great too! Math Advocates work to help Indigenous students succeed in mathematics by transforming numeracy skills, attitudes and understanding. We tutor in one-to-one and small-group situations, and facilitate the learning of math in fun, practical ways.

You will enjoy creating and delivering activities in various settings, including land-based and indoor classrooms, and work to make the practical concepts and application of mathematics for career and daily living relevant to the learner. Think measurements for baking, angles for building structures, financial literacy, physics related to falling a tree or framing wall tents, for example.

We are seeking individuals who are able to work successfully with those who may be struggling with understanding the foundations and concepts of math. You will have the ability to support learners at varying levels, and be able to break down various math concepts for greater understanding.

Competence with technology is necessary. Candidates require a strong knowledge of Yukon First Nations worldview, and the ability to provide youth with some of the tools necessary to fulfil their goals for self-determination, to have financial literacy and assist them with future employment goals.

Hiring preference will be provided to those who identify as Indigenous – please self-identify.
