Northwestel is hiring a Manager, Accounting to join the dynamic team!

Reporting to the Director, Finance and Accounting, the Manager, Accounting is responsible for the development and implementation of all accounting and accounts receivable functions within the Company, including policy implementations and updates, policy application rulings and controllership functions for Northwestel’s small subsidiaries, controls and reporting to facilitate accurate, timely and relevant accounting records of Accounts Receivable. Ensuring company assets are protected, risks are minimized, and financial methodologies and measurement tools (policies, procedures, and programs) are in place to allow effective management of the various business units.

This position prepares performance reporting and works closely with the Manager, Contact Centre (Collections) to find improvements in credit and bad debt management within the Company. The incumbent serves as the central point of escalation within the Corporate Services organization for all accounts receivable issues. 

In addition, this position provides direction, mentorship and support for the following direct reports:

  • Accounting Clerk (4)

Specific Accountabilities

  • Ensure the effective and efficient use of Northwestel’s working capital through the development and implementation of policies with collaboration from departments external to accounting.
  • Manage the implementation of new IFRS standards.
  • Provide guidance to the organization through the interpretation and application of accounting and financial reporting standards.
  • Investigate methods to safeguard assets of Northwestel by monitoring and improving accounting controls and ensuring internal audit requirements are met while ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Improve processes involved in the preparation of financial information, through the maintenance and continual improvement of financial reporting and analysis systems, preparing templates and identifying and resolving problems.  
  • Actively participate in a leadership capacity in various cross-departmental teams to plan and execute strategic business objectives.
  • Review and approve the subsidiaries financial statements monthly
  • Support corporate tax compliance and planning including accurate and timely preparation of tax remittances and account reconciliations.
  • Backfill for the Senior Manager, Accounting and the Corporate Portfolio Manager, as required, including assisting in the leading of the employees in those departments.
  • Selects, leads, coaches/mentors, directs and manages the Accounting Clerks responsible for accounts receivable. This includes ensuring appropriate development and competency enhancement for the incumbents.
  • Ensure timely, accurate, relevant and reliable reporting on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis to the Directors, Managers and Employees as required. 
  • Ensure the safeguarding of assets via appropriate accounting controls, proper risk management processes and facilitating the implementation of internal and external audit identified risk mitigation plans pertaining to Accounts Receivable. 
  •  Efficient operation of the Accounts Receivable functions and related controls.
  • Actively participate in a leadership capacity in various cross-departmental teams to plan and execute strategic business objectives.
  • Part of the Finance Leadership Team.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or Commerce and/or equivalent work experience.
  • Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) designation would be considered an asset.
  • Must be well versed in IFRS, as well as other technical aspects of accounting and corporate taxation.
  • Minimum of five (5) years appropriate and applicable work experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years of management experience at the professional level with a sound record of leadership achievement.
  • Demonstrated excellence in the technical aspects of accounting as it pertains to Accounts Receivable. 
  • Proficient with accounting systems and processes, preferably with the SAP financial system.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically.
  • Excellent negotiating, problem-solving, analytical, planning and communication skills (oral, written and presentation).
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships at all levels of an organization builder and staff management and interpersonal skills are critical.
  • Knowledge of or previous work experience in the telecommunications industry would be an asset.
